Coming from a non-musical family, Oliver’s love for music began in secondary school when he joined the school choir. He quickly developed a passion for singing, followed by playing the double bass, composing, and conducting. Oliver is the Conductor of University of Leeds Chamber Choir, as well as the LUUMS New Music Ensemble, and holds an Enhanced Choral Scholarship at Leeds Cathedral under Tom Leech. Within this Scholarship he work closely with their various choirs as well as their renowned Schools Singing Programme. Oliver held a Young Conducting Scholarship with Sing For Pleasure and has recently joined the Royal School of Church Music’s Emerging Leader Programme. Outside of the choral world, Oliver has studied conducting with orchestral conductor Ben Crick (Skipton Camerata, Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra).
Oliver’s compositional output spans a wide range of genres including Art Song, Chamber Music, and most prominently Choral Music. He has a vast body of Choral work including accessible SATB settings for Parish Choirs and Amateur Chamber Choirs, ATB Anthems and Motets for Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars, Mass Settings of all shapes and sizes, and a growing body of Sacred Music for Young Voices. In all of his work, Oliver aims to create a perfect blend of musical interest, practicality, and accessibility.
In addition to his work in the choral tradition, Oliver is a skilled composer of art songs and chamber music. His compositions span a range of musical styles and ensembles from duets and trios to chamber orchestra pieces and song cycles. His unique harmonic style blends elements of romanticism and jazz, infused with modern and contemporary musical idioms.
Beyond composing and conducting, Oliver is in demand as a solo or ensemble Tenor, familiar with operatic and contemporary repertoire, however, his main interest lies in performing 20th Century English Art songs, specifically the works of Roger Quilter and his contemporaries. Oliver has been privileged enough to perform with some of the UK’s leading musicians including Chamber Choir Ireland, and has featured in exciting festival performances such as the Leeds Emerging Artists Festival 2024.
